When the police do not take it seriously, the kids are left with a nasty taste in their mouths: This Is Not My First Time
An 18-year-old girl in the southern Indian state of Kerala is the first victim of an alleged gang rape.
The woman told her family that the man she had been dating for a month, also called Sam, had sexually assaulted her and then threatened to kill her.
The couple, who lives in the coastal city of Kannur, told the police that the attack began after the two had argued over money.
According to the woman’s father, the incident happened on October 1.
The man was arrested later on.
It was the first such case of sexual assault in Kerala, where the state is one of the most conservative states in the country.
The accused, a local businessman, had fled the scene and had not yet been apprehended.
Police say the woman was taken to a local hospital where she was examined.
Her father, K Ramesh, told The Times of India that the police have been treating her for injuries to her upper body, including a broken pelvis and bruising to her genitals.
She was transferred to a hospital in Kannada for further treatment.
Sam has been arrested, and the investigation is ongoing.
“It’s been a bad week for us.
She has suffered trauma and we want justice for her,” Ramesa said.
An estimated 1,000 to 1,200 rapes are reported each year in Kerala.
Police have not confirmed the woman is the victim of a gang rape, but local police have said the incident may have taken place at the residence of a relative of Sam.
A police source said the woman did not know her assailant.
The police have also launched a search for a relative who was at the house at the time.
In March, the state government had promised to set up an “anti-rape” committee to tackle the issue.
But many locals and activists have voiced concerns over the lack of action by the police.
Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, who took over the reins from the state’s previous Chief Minister, P. Jayalalithaa, had pledged to take up the issue of sexual violence.
According to a 2014 study by the Centre for Research on Women (CRW), India had the highest number of rapes in the world.
At the time, India recorded 7,000 such incidents per 100,000 people, making it one of Asia’s most violent countries.
While the government has pledged to make the issue a national priority, the police’s failure to take the allegations seriously has sparked widespread anger and protests in the state.
