What’s Next for Sri Lanka?
The Sri Lankan government has said it will increase the number of youth volunteers in the country to more than 50,000, bringing its total number of volunteer-based employees to more then 2 million.
The announcement came at a time of heightened political tensions as a coalition led by former Prime Minister Maithripala Sirisena called for a national referendum on the independence of the country’s Muslim-majority north.
Sirisena said in a statement that the country had not had a democratic, fair, or equal government for over a decade.
The prime minister’s statement comes amid growing tensions over the countrys economic and social stability, with the recent election of a nationalist government led by the president and his deputy.
The United States, Britain, France, and Germany all called on Sri Lanka to hold the referendum.
The Sri Lankans have not responded to the statement, but the country has been embroiled in a deadly conflict with the Sri Lankang military that has left over 10,000 people dead and caused millions of dollars worth of damage.
